Art Business Georgia: Why Talented Artists Are Losing the Battle Against Poverty

Art business in Georgia faces a difficult reality. While the modern world has opened genuine opportunities for artists to transform their creative skills into sustainable careers, Georgia remains a country where art is still rarely considered a viable income-generating profession. Despite a growing number of young people pursuing artistic education, the gap between creative talent and economic opportunity continues to hold back the development of a thriving art business in Georgia.


Art as a Profession: A Global Opportunity, a Local Challenge

Art encompasses a diverse range of human activities โ€” from music, theater, film, and dance to literature, architecture, painting, and beyond. In many countries, these disciplines have evolved into fully developed industries. In Georgia, however, some forms of art fare considerably better than others in material terms.

Architecture, for instance, tends to offer wider economic prospects than painting or music in the Georgian context โ€” largely because it connects more directly to practical business needs. Meanwhile, artists working in less commercially oriented disciplines face significantly greater challenges in building financially stable careers.


Growing Enrollment, Shrinking Opportunities

According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia, the number of students enrolling in bachelor’s programs at faculties of Arts and Science grew almost 1.6 times between 2011 and 2015. Every year, hundreds of young people become students at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts โ€” the country’s leading higher art institution, offering education that corresponds to modern requirements.

However, providing education has proven far easier than teaching students how to turn that education into a sustainable livelihood. Georgia still largely lacks a culture of teaching artists how to build businesses around their professions โ€” and the consequences of this gap are significant.


The Numbers Tell a Difficult Story

According to a survey conducted by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in 2016, 31% of young people are only partly employed in their profession, while 35% have lost connection with their first profession entirely and had to adapt to different types of work. For students who enrolled in art faculties, these statistics represent a discouraging reality โ€” one that raises serious questions about the value society places on creative careers.

Furthermore, according to FactCheck Georgia, the number of people living below the absolute poverty line grew by 0.5% in 2016, reaching approximately 21.3% of the total population. In this economic context, it becomes difficult to expect broader public investment in art and culture when basic living conditions remain a challenge for a significant portion of the population.


Small Steps Forward โ€” But Not Enough

There have been some encouraging developments. Certain events and platforms have begun giving young creative people lower-cost opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Painters, for example, can now list their works in online auctions โ€” a model that has successfully supported artists in many other countries and represents one path toward turning creativity into a career.

Nevertheless, these innovations remain largely unknown to older Georgian artists, many of whom continue to sell their work on streets and in parks without access to organized platforms or collective representation. Notably, it is most often tourists โ€” rather than local buyers โ€” who show interest in purchasing this kind of art.


Literature, Music, Film and Theater: The Most Underserved Fields

Georgian writers face the reality that even when their books are published, few readers feel financially comfortable taking a chance on a new local author when household budgets are tight. Many talented Georgian musicians, meanwhile, seek opportunities abroad โ€” since even winning international music competitions does not provide sufficient grounds for a sustainable career at home.

Film and theater represent perhaps the most undervalued areas of all. Even Georgian films and animations that have received international awards are rarely seen on Georgian television, online platforms, or in cinemas. Artists themselves have frequently pointed to a lack of media attention as a key reason โ€” a particularly striking problem given that, in the 21st century, media has become one of the most powerful tools for building cultural visibility and commercial success.


What Needs to Change

The path forward for art business in Georgia requires action on multiple fronts. As long as schools and universities do not move toward more practical approaches to developing students’ entrepreneurial skills alongside their creative ones, graduates will continue to leave their professions behind. Moreover, as long as Georgian society and media remain indifferent to the country’s cultural achievements, artists will continue to direct their careers toward foreign markets.

The statistics on poverty and professional abandonment will only improve when Georgia invests as seriously in the business of art as it does in the education of artists.
