Georgia Trade Partners: How 15 Countries Drive a $2.3 Billion Export Economy<\/h3>\n

Georgia’s trade partners have grown significantly over the past decade, reflecting the country’s deliberate and consistent effort to integrate into global markets. A pivotal moment in this journey came on 27 June 2014<\/strong>, when Georgia signed an Association Agreement with the European Union. This agreement entered into force on 1 July 2016<\/strong>, and today the EU stands as Georgia’s main trade partner. Additionally, Georgia has been a member of the World Trade Organization since 2000<\/strong>, further cementing its place in the international trade community.<\/p>\n

\n

The DCFTA: Deepening Trade With Europe<\/h3>\n

A central component of the Association Agreement is the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA)<\/strong>, which introduced a preferential trade regime between Georgia and the EU. By aligning regulations more closely, the DCFTA has increased market access on both sides and enabled Georgian businesses to compete more effectively within the European market. Furthermore, the DCFTA has encouraged Georgia to bring its trade-related laws in line with internationally recognized legal frameworks.<\/p>\n

Around 29% of Georgia’s total trade<\/strong> takes place with the EU. According to the European Commission, EU exports to Georgia amounted to \u20ac1.96 billion in 2016<\/strong>, with key products including mineral products, machinery and appliances, chemical products, and transport equipment.<\/p>\n

\n

Georgia’s Top 15 Export Partners in 2017<\/h3>\n

According to World’s Top Exports, Georgia shipped US$2.3 billion<\/strong> worth of products around the globe in 2017. The following 15 countries imported the most Georgian shipments by dollar value during that year:<\/p>\n

What Georgia Imports<\/h3>\n

Georgia’s main import products include oil, motor cars, pharmaceutical products, wheat and meslin, sugar, and electrical equipment. The primary import partners include Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Germany, and the United States, among others.<\/p>\n

\n

The Free Trade Agreement With China: A Historic First<\/h3>\n

On 1 January 2008<\/strong>, Georgia signed a Free Trade Agreement with China, becoming the first country in the Caucasus region<\/strong> to establish such a deal with China. Under this agreement, a range of Georgian products \u2014 including honey, wine, tea, mineral water, vegetables, and other agricultural products \u2014 are exported to China with zero tariffs<\/strong> and without additional customs fees or transition periods.<\/p>\n

This agreement builds on a longstanding and growing relationship between the two countries. According to the Georgian National Wine Agency<\/strong>, approximately 7,585,407 bottles of Georgian wine<\/strong> were exported to China in the most recent reporting year, making China the third largest importer of Georgian wine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What These Agreements Mean for Georgia’s Future<\/h3>\n

Together, the DCFTA with the EU and the Free Trade Agreement with China position Georgia as a strategically connected trade hub between East and West. Georgia’s adoption of leading trade countries’ approaches to policy-making is expected to improve governance, strengthen the rule of law, and expand market access \u2014 consequently attracting greater levels of foreign investment into the country.<\/p>\n
